THE OXEN’S TALE BY FRANK TORTORICH I was asked if I would write some short historical articles for the monthly Sir’s newsletter. I find this an honor and compliment. As some of you know writing something short for me is not easy to do but it will be a fun challenge. I decided to call it, The Oxen’s Tale. I plan to give you bits of Amador County history, California history, some westward migration history, and then a bit of this and a bit of that. Some will start out with “Did you know?” For example, did you know that the saying “Lock, stock, and barrel” came from the manufacturing of the flintlock musket? The basic parts of the musket are, of course, the lock, this is the firing mechanism, which includes the powder pan; the frizzen; the hammer, that locks in the flint; the trigger; the stock is the wooden part; and lastly, the barrel. When you put them all together, you have it all – “Lock, Stock, and Barrel.” Later, it came to mean a job or task that is completed. I welcome questions, challenges, and suggestions.
